What's the best commuter bicycle under $500 that I could still take out on weekends for long rides (20 mi.+)?
I'm looking for a complete, multi-speed bicycle. Price has to include fenders, and this bike needs to be be able to take a bit of a beating at the bike racks and jumping off curbs, but still be comfortable and versatile enough to hit the pavement for a 20-25 mile ride on the weekend. At 27 my body's already getting more picky about the sports I play, and I want a bike that will introduce me to the sport of cycling, while also getting me back and forth from school. I've heard good things about the Kona 'Smoke.' Feel free to concur with that opinion or that of others listed below. Or just tell me what bike YOU think best fits the criteria. Thanks very much. In case you need to know , I'm a 6'2" male.

- under 500 might be tough - I had glanced at the smoke (nice looking) - I really don't think you will enjoy the gear ratio on your 20 mile ride (42/34/24) - I'm actually in the market for the same type of bike, but I have my eye on the Fisher Kaitai ($600) or something similar. http://www.fisherbikes.com/bike/model/kaitai also the Jamis Coda looks to be appealing - but I have not ridden those one yet http://www.biowheels.com/complete-bikes-commuter---touring.html
- Well this is your site to look for bike . http://www.bikeschool.com/links/ . Under $ 500 ,. Raleigh , Kona , Specialized and so on ......
- I've got a Jamis Coda Comp, which costs more than $500, but I seriously considered getting a Jamis Coda, which retails for $450.00. The geometry is the same as my bike, the components are just different. I love my bike. Take a look at a Jamis bike. I had never really heard of them until I bought one, and now I am a believer. (I might pick up one of their "Commuter" model like bikes just for fun.) The nice thing about the Coda line is that they are straight bar road bikes, so you get the larger wheels, but the upright posture, visibility and wide stance of a mountain bike.
- The Kona 'Smoke' will do the job nicely mate. In any event you need a Hybrid type bike, they are geared to go reasonably fast and as long as you don't put a wicker basket on the handlebars your son won't be embarrassed to travel with you. Best of luck mate.
- the wicker basket really slows you down, thats why my kid wont talk to me anymore? geez, I thought it was the handlebar tassles
